Home adaptations

Whether you move or stay, a few changes can make a home easier for many years: a level-access shower, a second banister, better lighting, a ramp at the door. Some are cheap; some may be paid for by a council grant.

A bathroom with a level-access walk-in shower

Common adaptations

  • level-access or walk-in showers in place of a bath
  • stairlifts and, in some homes, through-floor lifts
  • grab rails, second banisters and lever taps
  • ramps, wider doorways and better outside lighting

Help with the cost

Councils can give a Disabled Facilities Grant towards bigger adaptations if they are needed and you meet the conditions, and many areas have a home improvement agency that can help you apply. An occupational therapy assessment through your council is usually the first step, and it is free.

Questions to ask a fitter

  • Can I see similar jobs you have done, and speak to a past customer?
  • Is the price fixed, and does it include making good afterwards?
  • What is the guarantee, and who services it (stairlifts in particular)?
  • Are you TrustMark registered or a member of a relevant trade body?
