Declutterers and home organisers

Sorting the house is the part of downsizing people dread most, and the reason many never move at all. A good declutterer makes it manageable: a few hours at a time, no judgement, and nothing goes without your say-so.

How a declutterer helps

  • works through the house with you, one room or one cupboard at a time
  • helps you decide what to keep, what to pass to family, what to sell and what to give away
  • takes things to the charity shop, the tip or the auction house so they are actually gone
  • helps you plan what will fit in the new home before you move, not after

Questions to ask

  • Are you a member of APDO, the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers? Members agree to a code of ethics and carry insurance.
  • How long is a session, and how many do you think we will need?
  • Will you take things away, or do I need to arrange that separately?
  • Have you worked with people downsizing before?

Good to know

Start early. A year before you move is not too soon for the loft and the garage. Our free room-by-room declutter list is a good place to begin, and a declutterer can pick up from wherever you get stuck.
